What to look for when purchasing duck decoys

There a lot of factors to consider when shopping for duck decoys. First, you need to understand the type of duck you will be hunting & what decoys are the best to use for that particular breed of duck. There are however certain things you want to look for in each and every decoy you decide to purchase. Here are some of the big points to look for when looking for duck decoys for sale.

  • Decoy Pose: You want to have decoys with at least a few different poses that will help the ducks you are hunting feel more at ease with the situation they are flying into. If they feel comfortable enough to land you'll have a good chance of bagging one. Some common poses are sleepers, feeders, sleepers, and resting decoys.
  • Paint Quality & Style : With a wide range of paints to choose from decoys will come in various colors. UV reflective paints are being used often now because they make the decoy more visible to ducks. Its a nice extra touch but not 100% needed to make for a good hunt.
  • Construction : Most duck decoys for sale are a blend of plastic and foam. I small number of them are still made with wood. The plastics are light weight, and are easy for companies to mimic the look and feel of just about any duck. Foam decoys are nice if you are using lots of decoys in spreads. Being so light makes it easier to pack them in and out of where you are hunting.
  • Keel Design : How the decoys swim in the water is a major factor. If the decoy isn't making moves that are common among the species of duck you are hunting, there is a chance the ducks will not land in the area of your decoy. It is wise to try various styles to find one that works.
